West Java is one of the provinces in Indonesia, located on the Java island. West Java province consists of 17 districts, 9 cities, 625 subdistricts, 636 villages, and 5,227 subvillages. Many regional folklore of West Java province includes the Bagendit, the Origin of Cianjur, the Origin of Tangkuban Perahu or Sangkuriang, Si Kabayan, Folklore The Lutung Kasarung, & the Color Lakes.
Folklore Si Kabayan became very famous because the story is very light and entertaining. Si Kabayan portrayed as a young Slacker, but have a sincere heart and clever brain. Several Si Kabayan tales have versions and a short story that is not contiguous. Some stories have been written in the books or movies, and Several others of telling orally from generation to generation.
Below is a story of Si Kabayan:
Si Kabayan win the contest
In the village of Si Kabayan, there is a rich man known as the Abah Ontohod. Ontohod called because every time he scolded his employee, he likes to mention the word Ontohod. So that people in the village had called Abah Ontohod. Abah has a daughter, who looked gorgeous, although the skin somewhat blackish brown, not too dark. Because the skin is somewhat blackish brown, the girl was called Nyi Iteung.
Nyi Iteung has grown into a teenage girl and is undergoing puberty, it may be time to get married. But Abah doesn't want to have a carelessly son in law, his son in law must be good, rich, and skilled. We don't know why Abah wants to have a son in law with a keen sense of smell. Maybe if he in the fields, he could smell ghosts, tigers, wolves and other wild animals, be advised Abah has a large field. So people in the field can run away before the wild animals come into the field.
Therefore, Abah making contest, anyone who has a keen sense of smell, will be married with Nyi Iteung. The young man is very excited to hear it because they like Nyi Iteung. The young man prepares to hone his nose so sharp. The young men who join the competition none of them pass the Abah exam.
Si Kabayan is one of the youths in the village, he is lazy, he only does nothing while sunbathing in the morning with his sarong, occasionally clean his ear with a quill, he blinked his eyes. His friends rollicking doing exercises to hone the nose, he did not fall for it. He thinks it's pointless and never works.
One day, his friend met Si Kabayan, he asked, "Kabayan, why don't you join the contest?"
"I'm too lazy to do it, if it's certain destiny Nyi Item will be mine." Answer Si Kabayan while wearing a sarong on his head.
"it's not like that Kabayan, destiny has to do with the effort, if only nothing to do then she will not come to you. Did you like Nyi Iteung? "His friend advised.
Si Kabayan replied, "Yes, I do like Nyi Iteung, though her brown skin, but she was beautiful, and rich. And it seems like he likes me too, hehehe..., "Si Kabayan answered proudly.
"Then, if you like her, pursue her!" His friend told him.
"Yes, I will join the contest, but may I borrow money, please, for sharpening my sense of smell!" Replied Si Kabayan, rising from his seat.
"Thank God, if you want to join the contest, I'd like to give you some money. You can return it if you become an Abah's son in law. "His friend said with a smile.
"Of course.. you'll see," replied Si Kabayan while he went somewhere. But he set off in the direction of the market.
Si Kabayan go to the fruit store. When home, he brings a lot of fruit is watermelon, rambutan, mango, banana and durian.
The next day Si Kabayan went to the house of Abah and enroll for the contest.
In arriving, turn of Si Kabayan, Abah took him to the fields, to test the sharp smell sense while looking him in the fields.
"Let's go into the field Kabayan, take your hoe!" Said Abah.
With confidence Si Kabayan go with Abah to the field carrying a hoe and use of bamboo hat. Though he never held a hoe and work in the fields before as being lazy.
When they got to the field, Si Kabayan began to work. People who have never worked in the fields like him, only moments she has experienced fatigue because of back pain.
"Why Kabayan, diligent work!" Said Abah.
"Abah, I smell something." Answer Si Kabayan while he inhaled deeply as it smelt something.
Abba surprised, "What smell Kabayan?" "If not mistaken, this is the smell of Rambutan Bah." Said Si Kabayan while peek left and right.
"Come Kabayan, lets look for it!" Said Abah with joy.
Si Kabayan walked toward the banana trees, while his nose smelt a deep search for the smell.
"Bah, there is Rambutan, there are a lot of it!" Si Kabayan screaming, holding up Rambutan with his hand.
"Nice Kabayan, Let's eat!" Replied Abah, approaching Si Kabayan.
Abah and Si Kabayan sat eating Rambutan.
"Let continue the work Kabayan " said Abah after they finished eating Rambutan.
"Come Bah," replied Si Kabayan while concealing his easy sense.
Then they continue working in the fields, because Si Kabayan rarely work in the fields, the new work briefly, he already felt sore.
"Bah, There was the smell again," said Si Kabayan.
"What smell Kabayan?" Abah curious.
"It's Like the smell of Durian, Bah," replied Si Kabayan.
"Well, coincidence Kabayan, that is my favorite fruit, Let's look!" Said Abah, rising.
Just like before, Si Kabayan walk while smelling, looking for Durian
"Abah, here is Durian, there are two pieces and big." Said Si Kabayan lifting Durian.
"Very nice Kabayan, Let's open it." Said Abah very happy.
Abah and Si Kabayan sat eating Durian until the finish.
Once full, they resumed the work. So it went every Si Kabayan tired. he always smells the fruit until all the fruits that Si Kabayan bought from the market and deliberately in the hideout is gone.
When he is very tired, Si Kabayan thinking, "What next? all the fruit was gone, there is still a lot of work to do, what else should be I done?" He said to himself.
When Abah was working, Si Kabayan suddenly stood up and shocked by something.
"What Kabayan?" Asked Abah, he was surprised to see Si Kabayan suddenly standing.
"There is a smell of something Abah." Said Si Kabayan.
"What smell Kabayan, Let's find out, who knows there are fruits, you have a good nose, suited became my son in law," Abah said with happy.
"Thank you Abah, but this is a strange smell, not fruit." Said Si Kabayan.
"What smell Kabayan?" Answer Abah.
"I Think this is the smell of Tiger Abah!" Said Si Kabayan while standing fear.
"Let's get out of here Kabayan, before the tiger come here" Abah said as he ran away and left the Si Kabayan.
Si Kabayan running behind Abah while feigning fright when he can't help laughing.
Because Si Kabayan has a keen sense of smell so that she won the contest, and as a reward he was married to Nyi Iteung.
That's the story of Si Kabayan married Nyi Iteung.
