Si Kabayan's Research

The research was conducted to look for evidence of the existence of Si Kabayan. Based on the Sutaarga record (1965), there are some opinions or studies that have been conducted by both the Dutch and Indonesian. The first people who are undertaking research is Mrs. Maria Coster Wijsman in 1929 that compared the presence of Si Kabayan with prominent European folklore, Tijl Uilenspiegel.

Wijsman interpret Si Kabayan as a sort of village officials in charge of delivering the news. The term is still used in Java and Tanganan Pangringsingan. It also connects the term with ordinary people who lead the festivity in the Malay characters.

Prof. Berg examines the meaning of Si Kabayan based on etymology. According to Berg, Kabayan word derived from Sanskrit, which means the village official lighting parts. Si Kabayan then asked Nyi Iteung "Iteung where is my friend?"
"Oh, he was gone while you at the pond, I asked him to wait for Kang Kabayan, and he asked for something," replied Nyi Iteung.
"Demand what?" Replied Si Kabayan.
"He asked for a Halu, I didn't give it, because we only had one Halu." Answer Nyi Iteung.
"Why didn't you give him, its only a Halu, give it to me. Where is the Halu? give it to me, I will go after my friend and give it to him!!. "replied Si Kabayan.

Si Kabayan then ran after his friend while holding a Halu, in order to be seen by his friends, also shouting his name, "Ki Sobat, this is a Halu for you, I'd like you to have it as a souvenir... !!!."

His friend was surprised to see Si Kabayan ran after him while holding a Halu, he then sprints, for fear of Si Kabayan will beat him.

Si Kabayan, A Story From West Java

Several Si Kabayan tales have versions and a short story that is not contiguous. Some stories have been written in the books or movies, and Several others of telling orally from generation to generation.

Si Kabayan win the contest

In the village of Si Kabayan, there is a rich man known as the Abah Ontohod. Ontohod called because every time he scolded his employee, he likes to mention the word Ontohod. So that people in the village had called Abah Ontohod. Abah has a daughter, who looked gorgeous, although the skin somewhat blackish brown, not too dark. Because the skin is somewhat blackish brown, the girl was called Nyi Iteung.

Nyi Iteung has grown into a teenage girl and is undergoing puberty, it may be time to get married. But Abah doesn't want to have a carelessly son in law, his son in law must be good, rich, and skilled. We don't know why Abah wants to have a son in law with a keen sense of smell. Maybe if he in the fields, he could smell ghosts, tigers, wolves and other wild animals, be advised Abah has a large field. So people in the field can run away before the wild animals come into the field.

Si Kabayan is one of the youths in the village, he is lazy, he only does nothing while sunbathing in the morning with his sarong, occasionally clean his ear with a quill, he blinked his eyes. One day, his friend met Si Kabayan, he asked, "Kabayan, why don't you join the contest?"

"Come Kabayan, lets look for it!" Said Abah with joy.

Si Kabayan walked toward the banana trees, while his nose smelt a deep search for the smell.
"Bah, there is Rambutan, there are a lot of it!" Si Kabayan screaming, holding up Rambutan with his hand.
"Nice Kabayan, Let's eat!" Replied Abah, approaching Si Kabayan.
Abah and Si Kabayan sat eating Rambutan.

"Let continue the work Kabayan " said Abah after they finished eating Rambutan.
 "Come Bah," replied Si Kabayan while concealing his easy sense.
Then they continue working in the fields, because Si Kabayan rarely work in the fields, the new work briefly, he already felt sore.

"Bah, There was the smell again," said Si Kabayan.
"What smell Kabayan?" Abah curious.
"It's Like the smell of Durian, Bah," replied Si Kabayan.

When Abah was working, Si Kabayan suddenly stood up and shocked by something.
"What Kabayan?" Asked Abah, he was surprised to see Si Kabayan suddenly standing.

Si Kabayan's Character

Sundanese people must know about Si Kabayan, he is the figure of folktales that are told from generation to generation by grandparents to grandchildren, now Si Kabayan story was made into books, even was made into films. Si Kabayan highly favored by the Sundanese. The proof is the story of Si Kabayan never ending. If we thorough the stories, Si Kabayan has inconsistent character. in several stories, the character of Si Kabayan is not always same.

Sometimes he portrayed as lazy, shameless, and boldly toying others, including his father in law, Abah. Sometimes he also portrayed as an innocent, clever, and brave heart. But basically, the person who created the Si Kabayan could describe that Si Kabayan have the nature of the innocent and not acted arbitrarily.

In Banten there is a grave were considered of the Si Kabayan grave. Who knows the truth of the person buried in this grave, whether Si Kabayan whose the cast of folktale or another Si Kabayan. Si Kabayan in the folktale is fictional characters, only the imaginary person who created the story, so it is impossible there is a grave of Si Kabayan. But there is a possibility, probably after the funeral, a story about Si Kabayan spread, maybe written or re-created by the maker of a folktale. The truth of a man named Si Kabayan must be proven scientifically by the research.

Si Kabayan "Life Is A Laugh And Love"

One day I Kabayan and his friend were walking to somewhere. Along the way his friend was astonished at the behavior of Si Kabayan. Each uphill road Si Kabayan laughing like receiving happiness. And conversely, Each downhill road, he sobbed like getting grief. He does not understand it, finally his friend asked:

"Kabayan, I do not understand why every uphill road you was laughing out loud, even though I deeply felt tired walk on it? If it goes downhill, you cry like people who are distressed, even though I feel happy, because walking is not too tired. Kabayan what's so wrong? "

Si Kabayan Fasting

One day, when it was almost time for day prayer in the month of fasting Si Kabayan got a cigar from his friend, Ki Silah, whose just returning from the city.

"Thank you, Ki Silah," replied Si Kabayan.

After his friends left, Si Kabayan smelt the great cigars and scented it with his nose. The desire to smoke a cigar comes once. But the fear of getting caught by someone else, therefore he went to the hut in the middle of the field, then he started smoking the cigar.

While enjoying the fragrant of smoke a cigar and suddenly he heard a voice calling, a voice of his father in law, Abah, "Kabayan... Kabayan!!! !!!

Si Kabayan nervous, then the cigar he inserted into kopiah (like a hat), because he donw want to discharge it into the fields.

Abah surprised, when he saw smoke coming out of the top of Si Kabayan head.

"Kabayan, What is it that burns your Kopiah?" He asked.

Si Kabayan more nervous and shy, but immediately replied: "eh, eh, eh, eh, this Abah, a cigar, a former dawn earlier, I forgot to put out."

One day I Kabayan see Nyi Iteung, his wife, cleaning taro that taken from his garden. Si Kabayan then asked:

"Nyi Iteung, do you know not how to eat taro that does not itch in the throat?"

Anyway, all kinds of pain always go to the doctor. One day I Kabayan went to the doctor. He complained all of body aches.

"Where it hurt?" Asked the doctor.
"All body pain, Doc."

"Everywhere!" Said Si Kabayan.

Kabayan then touched his right knee with his finger. "Aw, hurt!"

"Nolednad, I was the gatekeepers of this well, I'm Grandfather." Said Si Kabayan. "I warn you Nolednad, you should love Kabayan because he is my favorite grandson. Do not you dare, you waste him.
